For our first tasting of 2024, we are inviting Sir Maurice O Connell of Wayward Irish Spirits from his family home, Lakeview Estate at Lough Leane in Killarney to introduce us to his Liberator and Lakeview Single Estate whiskeys. Maurice is the great great great grandson of Daniel O Connell's younger brother James hence the brand name 'The Liberator.' Given that they only located in Killarney and are very welcoming to any callers, we have wanted to do a tasting with Maurice for quite some time now.
Founded in 2017, Wayward irish Spirits started as a bottler/bonder and bottled produce from both Cooley and Great Northern Distillery and indeed blended these two whiskeys together. Their first launch was in 2020 just before Covid and the lockdown arrived on our shores.
They now have an impressive stable behind them and are well known for their cask finishes which include port and moscatel. Some of these whiskeys are truly excellent and we will have a chance to try them on the night. They also grow their own barley which is then distilled into single pot still whiskey on site where it also matures.
